Council finalists in prestigious awards

The awards celebrated the best managers and projects from Councils across Queensland. CEO Michael Bissell - pictured above with deputy CEO Eva Haines –said achieving  finalist status in two highly competitive categories was a testament to the hard work and strong governance developed by the Council over the past few years.

“The LGMA awards are the pinnacle of recognition for outstanding work done by local Council management teams across Queensland,” Mr Bissell said.
“Palm Island Council was a finalist in the Community Shaping and Resourcefulness categories representing a huge achievement for a small and remote community competing against some of the largest Councils in Queensland.

“Achieving finalist status is recognition for our hard-working staff and their efforts in shaping the community we live in while demonstrating resourcefulness by doing more with less. Though we didn’t win this year, our finalist status is acknowledgement of how far we have come with our governance, operating systems and procedures and demonstrates that we are heading in the right direction.  “As a Council, we will continue to work hard to implement best practice into our operations and design and implement further community shaping projects that will make our community even stronger.

“We look forward to going one better in 2025 and will continue to work tirelessly to achieve a better and stronger Palm Island.” The LGMA Queensland Award winners were announced at a Gala function late last month. Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Council was a finalist in the following categories:

  • Community Shaping – recognises projects or initiatives that have influenced community behaviour and practice.
  • Resourcefulness – recognises projects or initiatives that showcase the philosophy of doing more with less.
