The Environmental Health Officer plays a practical, community-facing role supporting public health, animal management, environmental monitoring and safer local environments across Palm Island.
About the Role
As the Environmental Health Officer, you will help deliver environmental health services with a strong focus on animal welfare, community education, routine inspections, record keeping and practical support for public health outcomes.
You’ll be:
- Participating in the development and delivery of environmental health education programs in the community
- Contributing to operational planning and reporting
- Undertaking routine inspections, investigations, surveys, enquiries, and other assigned tasks relative to the environmental health of the community
- Undertake community animal patrols
- Conduct regular presentations on animal management and welfare issues to the community and schools by personal contact (meetings, lessons) and/or local newsletters
- Conduct regular inspections of the sewerage plant/lagoon and water quality
Key Responsibilities
- Support animal welfare activities including feral animal control, domestic animal monitoring, impounded animal care, registrations and record keeping.
- Undertake routine inspections, investigations, surveys and enquiries that contribute to the environmental health of the community.
- Deliver community education activities on environmental health, animal management and welfare matters.
- Maintain safe work practices and contribute to operational planning, reporting and service improvement.
What You’ll Bring
- Confidence working with animals and engaging respectfully with community members, Council teams and external stakeholders.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, with sound conflict resolution, problem-solving, organisation and time management capability.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, apply good judgement, follow safe work practices and interpret relevant legislation and Council policies.
- Current Queensland “C” Class Driver’s Licence.
Desirable
- Certificate III in Indigenous Environmental Health or equivalent or relevant experience to the role.
- Experience using computers would be highly regarded but is not essential as training will be provided
- Experience preparing reports and program evaluations.
