Queensland has privacy legislation which applies to the Queensland public sector—the Information Privacy Act 2009 (IP Act). The IP Act contains privacy principles which set out how agencies may and must handle personal information. Personal information means any information about an identifiable person
The Palm Island Aboriginal Council sets out details of the types of personal information we hold and how we handle this information.
Information Collected
Council’s website is monitored to identify areas of interest to visitors, to continually improve your experience. For statistical and site design purposes, we make a record of your visit in log files contained on the server. The information we collect is usually in the form of "cookies".
The information we collect on site visits include:
- your server address;
- your top level domain name (e.g .com, .gov, .au, .org etc.);
- the date and time of your visit to our website;
- the pages you access and files you download;
- the previous site visited;
- your browser type;
- time spent on individual pages and the site overall.
This information will not be used in any way to identify an individual user and will only be stored in the event that you voluntarily provide it to us, such as making an online payment, the completion of an online survey or form, by submitting an email enquiry or maintenance request. This information will be used for the purpose for which it was provided and will not be disclosed to third parties without your consent or if authorised or required by law.

Website analytics
We may use third-party service providers to monitor and analyse the use of our service. Council uses Google Analytics to track and report on website traffic. Google uses the data collected to track and monitor the use of our Service. This data is shared with other Google services. Google may use the collected data to contextualize and personalize the ads of its own advertising network.
Access to your personal information
You can apply for access to documents held by the Council containing your personal information, under the Right to Information Act 2009, or via Council’s Administrative Access Scheme. Further information can be found on our Right to Information webpage.
Use and disclosure
We will only use personal information collected via our website for the purposes for which it was given to us and/or for related, internal management purposes.
We do not disclose your personal information to other government agencies, organisations or anyone else unless one of the following applies:
- you consented to the disclosure
- you would have a reasonable expectation that your personal information would be disclosed
- it is required or authorised by law
- it will prevent or lessen a serious threat to somebody’s life or health; and
- the disclosure is reasonably necessary for a law enforcement activity
