At Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Council, we're focused on supporting our community, creating local opportunities and delivering reliable services that make a difference every day.

Council is entering an exciting period of growth as we deliver the bold vision of our Corporate Plan 2026 to 2031. This recruitment drive reflects our progress and momentum—an opportunity for experienced and emerging local government professionals to join a high-performing, values-driven team committed to lasting change for current and future generations. Your work will directly strengthen community resilience, local capability and long-term wellbeing, helping families, Elders and organisations rebuild and thrive.

If you want your work to have real impact, and you value community, culture, and collaboration, we encourage you to apply.

About the Role

As our Mechanic, you'll maintain Council's vehicles, plant and equipment operating safely and efficiently, supporting the teams that deliver essential services across Palm Island. You'll work closely with staff, contribute your trade skills and play an important role in keeping our community moving.

You will carry out servicing, inspections, diagnostics, repairs and preventative maintenance across Council’s fleet, plant and equipment. This hands-on role will help ensure vehicles and machinery are safe, operational and available to support essential community services. You will bring strong mechanical knowledge, practical problem-solving skills, a safety-focused approach and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

If you're practical, safety-focused and take pride in quality workmanship, we'd love to hear from you.

This role is based on Palm Island and preference will be given to Palm Island community members, in line with merit-based recruitment and Council’s commitment to local capability development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform scheduled servicing, inspections, maintenance and repairs on Council vehicles, plant and equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical faults and complete repairs in a safe, timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Carry out preventative maintenance to minimise downtime and support reliable service delivery.
  • Maintain accurate job cards, service records, parts usage information and other required documentation.
  • Identify required parts, materials and tools, and support effective workshop organisation and stock control.
  • Contribute to a clean, safe and compliant workshop environment in line with WHS and Council requirements.
  • Provide practical advice and support to staff regarding the safe operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Adaptable and flexible to undertake tasks not as a Mechanic as directed by your Line Manager and/or Director Assets, Infrastructure and Operations.

What We’re Looking For

You will demonstrate sound mechanical capability, a strong commitment to safety and an understanding of the cultural, social and community context of Palm Island. You will take a practical, hands-on approach to maintenance and repairs while supporting respectful engagement with staff, community members and stakeholders.

  • Relevant trade qualification in light vehicle mechanical technology, diesel fitting, heavy vehicle mechanics or related mechanical trade.  Ability to provide evidence of trade qualification.
  • Demonstrated experience servicing, diagnosing and repairing vehicles, plant, machinery or mechanical equipment.
  • Sound understanding of preventative maintenance, fault finding, workshop safety and equipment compliance requirements.
  • Ability to work autonomously, prioritise urgent repairs and take ownership of quality outcomes.
  • Strong communication, record keeping and problem-solving skills.
  • Commitment to Workplace Health and Safety, safe work practices and Council policies and procedures.
  • Current driver’s licence and willingness to travel locally or regionally, if required.

Desirable:
